EAST Greenland Expedition
JOIN US UNDER SAIL IN GREENLAND
September 1–8, 2027 · Scoresby Sound aboard Opal
Some places are difficult to put into words. After returning to East Greenland several times, we still find ourselves thinking about the quiet anchorages, drifting icebergs, and days spent exploring together. The film below offers a glimpse of what life out here feels like.
A WORLD OF OUR OWN
Eight days and seven nights, the beautiful wooden schooner Ópal becomes our home as we explore the vast fjords of Scoresby Sound. Life takes on a different rhythm here. Mornings on deck with coffee in hand, the Arctic breeze on your face, and the creak of timber beneath your feet. Ice drifting past the ship, glaciers rumbling in the distance, and long conversations around the dinner table. Away from everyday routines, there is time to look a little longer, follow your curiosity, and enjoy being outside. Having shared these journeys with wonderful groups over the years, we know that the people on board become just as much a part of the experience as the landscape.
THE EXPEDITION
Join Tashi and me for a small-group photography and sailing expedition along Greenland’s remote east coast. After flying from Reykjavík to Greenland, we’ll board Ópal and set out into the fjords. We’ll sail between towering mountains and sculpted icebergs, anchor in sheltered bays, make shore landings to hike and explore the landscapes and the remote settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit. Some days might take us through autumn-colored tundra; others will unfold slowly among drifting ice, with time to study the shapes, textures and changing light around us. Our route will be shaped by the weather, ice and conditions each day, leaving room for discoveries along the way. We’ll keep an eye out for wildlife, with the possibility of encountering musk oxen, Arctic foxes, seals and occasionally polar bears. As darkness returns to the Arctic, we may also be lucky enough to see northern lights. These encounters can never be promised, which makes them all the more special when they happen.

LIFE ABOARD ÓPAL
Ópal is a traditional wooden schooner with plenty of character—and after a few days, she begins to feel like home. There is space on deck to photograph the passing scenery, find a quiet corner, or simply watch the ice drift by. Below deck, the cozy saloon is where we gather for meals, exchange stories and warm up by the fireplace after time outside. There is even a hot tub on deck, where you can enjoy the surrounding mountains and icebergs from a slightly warmer perspective.
ACCOMMODATION & WHAT TO BRING
Accommodation is in six shared twin cabins with bunk beds. There are two shared bathrooms and two showers on board. The cabins are comfortable but compact, so pack thoughtfully and bring luggage that can be easily stowed away.
Warm, windproof overalls are provided for colder hours on deck. You will still need your own suitable layers, waterproof clothing and sturdy hiking boots for our shore landings. We’ll send you a detailed packing list before departure.
Sharing a sailing boat for a week is part of the experience. A little flexibility and consideration go a long way and we hope everyone will feel comfortable being themselves—whether that means joining a lively conversation or enjoying some quiet time alone.
TIME ASHORE
When conditions allow, we’ll leave Ópal by small boat to explore the shores on foot. Expect uneven ground, time outdoors in changing weather and plenty of pauses to photograph or take in the surroundings. Our guides will choose suitable landing sites and routes according to the conditions.
FAQ
Do I need a sleeping bag or towels?
No—warm bedding, blankets and towels are provided on board.
Will I have phone reception or internet access?
Expect to be mostly offline during the expedition. Cell phone reception is limited to areas such as Constable Point and Ittoqqortoormiit and roaming availability depends on your provider. The ship has satellite phones for urgent communication. Let friends and family know that you may be out of reach for much of the week—and enjoy the chance to disconnect.
What about seasickness?
Much of our journey takes place within the fjords, where conditions are often more sheltered than on the open sea. However, wind and waves can still make for a rough passage. If you are prone to seasickness, come prepared with whatever usually works for you.
Can I charge my camera and other devices?
Yes, charging facilities are available on board, with European-style outlets. Bring a suitable adapter if needed. With several photographers sharing the charging space, please label your batteries and chargers with your initials so everyone can keep track of their equipment.
Do I need to be a photographer?
Not at all! You’re welcome whether you carry a full camera kit, take photos on your phone, or simply want to experience Greenland by sail. We’ll share photography advice and ideas along the way, but the expedition is about exploring together. There is just as much room for hiking, watching wildlife and enjoying life on board.
Can I buy drinks on board?
Alcohol and soft drinks are available to purchase. Your purchases will be added up throughout the week and settled in cash at the end of the trip. Please bring euros if you plan to buy drinks.
Tips for the crew are entirely optional. If you would like to leave one, euros are appreciated.
